The genesis of Project Open Art

The idea of the Project Open Art “giving a voice to ‘voiceless’ artists” was born in the winter semester 2006/2007 in the context of the seminar “’Kunst-Raum - eine virtuelle Ausstellungsplattform zeigenössischer außereuropäischer Kunst” at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg. The focus was to create a new form of art presentation for contemporary art from non-european artists. In many cases those artists have been confronted with questions like: “So, what is the African in your art?” To create awareness to such problematic definitions of art or artist in ethnical or national attributions/categories, the participants of the Project in 2013 decided to separate the continental categories on the homepage. Artists from all over the world can participate in the temporary exhibition “Same same, but different”. Even this title points out the idea to let the art speak for itself – without placing it in any categories. Next to the first exhibition in 2007 and the last temporary exhibition “Same same, but different” we would now like to invite you to visit the new virtual temporary exhibition “UTOPIA”
